{"id":10666,"date":"2023-12-24T18:25:47","date_gmt":"2023-12-24T23:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spartanshadows.com\/?p=10666"},"modified":"2023-12-24T18:25:47","modified_gmt":"2023-12-24T23:25:47","slug":"michigan-state-basketball-jeremy-fears-likely-out-for-the-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spartanshadows.com\/?p=10666","title":{"rendered":"Michigan State basketball: Jeremy Fears likely out for the season"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Michigan State basketball is likely to be out for the remainder of the season after suffering a gunshot wound on Friday.<\/h2>\n<p>On Friday night, Michigan State basketball freshman point guard <a href=\"https:\/\/msuspartans.com\/roster.aspx?rp_id=13671\">Jeremy Fears<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spartanshadows.com\/jeremy-fears-suffers-non-life-threatening-injury-being-shot\/\">suffered a non-life-threatening injury after being shot in the leg<\/a> back at his hometown. Fears has undergone a successful surgery and is recovering from his injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for the Spartan freshman, it sounds like his season might be over.<\/p>\n<h3>Jeremy Fears might be done for the year<\/h3>\n<p>Jeremy Fears Sr. confirmed with an Illinois basketball radio host that his son will likely miss three months after his surgery. To provide a little context, Jeremy was heavily recruited by Illinois out of high school and they are also recruiting his younger brother <a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/player\/jeremiah-fears-46125648\/\">Jeremiah Fears<\/a> as well. But this incident just feels different to me, and obviously not in a good way. Whenever a player suffers an injury during a game or practice it always has that sense of, \u201cinjuries happen in sports and it\u2019s part of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That by no means is me saying injuries aren\u2019t a bad thing, but injuries happen all the time in sports and you just have to move on.<\/p>\n<p>But this is different. This was an act of violence and a non-sports-related injury. Jeremy was reportedly, \u201cat a gathering with 20-25 friends talking and playing cards.\u201d Athletes aren\u2019t supposed to suffer season-ending injuries this way. No injury is ever \u201cfair\u201d but this just feels worse than a normal injury.<\/p>\n<h3>Impact on Michigan State\u2019s season<\/h3>\n<p>Fears is averaging 3.5 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game this season. He is also coming off arguably his best game as a Spartan in <a href=\"https:\/\/spartanshadows.com\/michigan-state-basketball-good-great-bad-ugly-stony-brook\/\">MSU\u2019s blowout win over Stony Brook.<\/a> Fears may have only scored one point, but he had a career-high 10 assists in the game.<\/p>\n<p>Fears has been averaging 15.3 minutes per game, so others will have to step up in his absence. One option for <a href=\"https:\/\/msuspartans.com\/staff-directory\/tom-izzo\/189\">Tom Izzo<\/a> is more playing time for<a href=\"https:\/\/msuspartans.com\/sports\/mens-basketball\/roster\/tre-holloman\/13629\"> Tre Holloman<\/a>. Tre has proven to be a solid contributor for us this season so he could be seeing more time as a backup point guard this year. Izzo also has the option to move <a href=\"https:\/\/msuspartans.com\/sports\/mens-basketball\/roster\/malik-hall\/13627\">Malik Hall<\/a> to the three, which opens up more minutes for guys like <a href=\"https:\/\/msuspartans.com\/sports\/mens-basketball\/roster\/coen-carr\/13670\">Coen Carr<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/msuspartans.com\/sports\/mens-basketball\/roster\/xavier-booker\/13669\">Xavier Booker<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/msuspartans.com\/roster.aspx?rp_id=13631\">Jaxon Kohler<\/a> when he returns at the four.<\/p>\n<h3>Jeremy Fears Sr. final comment<\/h3>\n<p>To end this article, I\u2019d like to share a quote from Jeremy\u2019s dad.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to thank everyone who reached out to family, the Michigan State staff, and players along with Coach Tom Izzo who put his family holiday plans on hold to try and be here with us, and the Illinois staff who I&#8217;ve known for years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We all need to come together at a time like this. Basketball doesn\u2019t matter when an act of violence like this occurs.
