{"id":4963,"date":"2023-06-13T20:13:18","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T00:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spartanshadows.com\/?p=4963"},"modified":"2023-06-13T20:13:18","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T00:13:18","slug":"payton-thorne-opens-up-about-his-msu-departure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spartanshadows.com\/?p=4963","title":{"rendered":"Payton Thorne opens up about his MSU departure"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Michigan State fans have heard all about why Keon Coleman left, but Payton Thorne has finally opened up about his decision to transfer.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Michigan State fans finally get a glimpse into the <a href=\"http:\/\/spartanshadows.com\/michigan-state-football-katin-houser-comments-thorne-transfer\/\">Payton Thorne <\/a>decision to transfer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">After an underwhelming season last year, many Michigan State fans demanded a change. The most common request was at the quarterback position. Those fans got their wish as Payton Thorne, a two-year starter for the Spartans entered the transfer portal, eventually ending up with the Auburn Tigers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Just this past week we heard the some of the first public comments from former Spartan wide receiver on his decision to leave and now this time it was Thorne\u2019s turn to talk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">In one of his first public interviews since moving on from East Lansing, Thorne joined the On To Victory podcast to talk about the process.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"On To Victory Podcast Episode 13\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YvYutsUc9SM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">For those that want the cliff notes without needing to watch the interview, we\u2019ll provide the information most likely of interest to MSU fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cIf you would\u2019ve asked me five days before I entered the portal if I was transferring, I would\u2019ve asked you what you were talking about,\u201d Thorne said when asked about his decision to enter the portal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">He\u2019d go on to say \u201cthere was a series of events that happened that brought me to the decision and it all happened really quick.\u201d Thorne didn\u2019t elaborate on what any of those \u201cthings\u201d were.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Since he decided to enter the portal, there\u2019s been much speculation that a part of the reason for his decision was because Mel Tucker wouldn\u2019t assure him that he had the starting job. While this theory remains complete speculation as of now, the timing suggests it could\u2019ve been a factor. Thorne was a two year starter for the Spartans and it\u2019s understandable that he\u2019d want assurances of a starting role. Tucker is notorious for saying each player has to earn their spot. Coach Tucker has lost players because of this mentality. He has been on record saying his philosophy is \u201ccompete to play, compete to stay.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">With Thorne coming off a down year, Tucker had already made it publicly known that the quarterback position, like all others needed to be earned and was up for grabs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Thorne would go on to talk about Mark Dantonio being the one that recruited him to Michigan State. He says Dantonio drew comparisons of him to Kirk Cousins. \u201cI came in with a goal of breaking all of his records,\u201d Thorne said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Perhaps notably the most intriguing part of the interview is when Thorne says \u201cweighing the pros and cons (of staying at Michigan State or transferring to Auburn) it wasn\u2019t close and that\u2019s what brought me to Auburn.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Again, Thorne didn\u2019t weigh in on what those pros and cons were directly. At another point in the interview Thorne talked about the difference in playing for a defensive minded head coach like Mel Tucker and his excitement of playing for an offensive minded staff like Auburn\u2019s. Perhaps this is what he\u2019s referencing but nonetheless, Michigan State fans won\u2019t take a liking to the perceived shot at the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">As the Spartans prepare to move forward with a new QB1, this will all prove to become quickly irrelevant.
