{"id":6045,"date":"2023-08-26T15:21:56","date_gmt":"2023-08-26T19:21:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spartanshadows.com\/?p=6045"},"modified":"2023-08-26T15:21:56","modified_gmt":"2023-08-26T19:21:56","slug":"michigan-state-basketball-in-state-5-star-sg-visits-east-lansing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spartanshadows.com\/?p=6045","title":{"rendered":"Michigan State basketball: In-state 5-star SG visits East Lansing"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Trey McKenney, a five-star in-state guard, visited East Lansing and Michigan State basketball on Aug. 1.<\/h2>\n<p>According to a recent report from\u00a0<em>24\/7 High School Hoops\u00a0<\/em>on Twitter, class of 2025 five-star guard Trey McKenney recently finished an unofficial visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/spartanshadows.com\/michigan-state-basketball-coen-carr-unbelievable-vertical-video\/\">Michigan State basketball<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">2025 5\u2b50\ufe0f Trey McKenney just wrapped up an unofficial visit to Michigan State and Tom Izzo, he told me.<\/p>\n<p>McKenney is a high-level defender on and off the ball and can score the ball from all three levels. A big time competitor on both ends.<\/p>\n<p>One of the top players in the \u201825\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9Qykmy6ubk\">pic.twitter.com\/9Qykmy6ubk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; 24\/7 High School Hoops (@247HSHoops) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/247HSHoops\/status\/1686491786590470144?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 1, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>McKenney is currently rated as the No. 13 recruit in the nation, per the 247Sports composite. He currently attends St. Mary&#8217;s Prep in Orchard Lake (Mich.) where he averaged an outstanding 25.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game and won the Michigan Associated Press Division 1 Player of the Year award. Orchard Lake is a northern suburb of Detroit, only about an hour from East Lansing, which could definitely factor into his recruitment.<\/p>\n<p>As for the player himself, McKenney has above-average size for his position, standing at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds. The young guard has a diverse skill set, but a couple of things that especially stand out are his ability to play excellent defense and his great handle on the ball. As evidenced by his stat line, though, it&#8217;s clear that he doesn&#8217;t struggle to put the ball in the basket, either.<\/p>\n<p>He just seems like the type of player Tom Izzo would love to have around. Aside from the fact that McKenney is a tall, versatile, complete combo guard who checks pretty much all the boxes, he matches the culture that Izzo has instilled. While the Spartan teams don&#8217;t often slack off on the offensive end, Michigan State loves to play defense. Putting the ball in the basket is important, but you have to stop the other team as well. That&#8217;s one of the things McKenney is best at, and that&#8217;d help him slot in at MSU perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/news\/trey-mckenney-breaks-down-pac-12-and-big-ten-schools-starts-talking-visit-michigan-usc-ucla-michigan-state-ohio-state\/\">July 17 article<\/a> from Jamie Shaw at On3Sports, McKenney had this to say about Michigan State:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cCoach Tom Izzo\u00a0is definitely a legendary coach. I talk with him and coach\u00a0TK (Thomas Kelley), and they text me all the time.
