When is it time to hit the panic button?<\/h2>\n<p>Quick 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/spartanshadows.com\/michigan-state-football-why-jim-leonhard-would-be-the-perfect-dc-hire\/\">Michigan State football<\/a> recap:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sept. 27\u00a0\u2013 Mel Tucker fired<\/li>\n<li>October\/November \u2013 Coaching search, extreme instability for student athletes<\/li>\n<li>Nov. 25 \u2013 Jonathan Smith hired<\/li>\n<li>Nov. 27\u00a0\u2013 10 players and counting plan to hit the portal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>When do we hit the panic button?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Spoiler alert: never.<\/p>\n<p>This year has been one heck of a rollercoaster ride for Michigan State football and I\u2019m afraid we\u2019re still going. This week has been suffocated by transfer portal news not only out of East Lansing, but the entire country. Now technically the transfer portal doesn\u2019t open until Dec. 4 but players have been announcing their intentions for when it does. Players entering as grad transfers are immediately eligible.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the names (so far):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>QB Katin Houser<\/li>\n<li>QB Noah Kim<\/li>\n<li>QB Sam Leavitt<\/li>\n<li>OT Spencer Brown<\/li>\n<li>WR Jaron Glover<\/li>\n<li>WR Tyrell Henry<\/li>\n<li>WR Christian Fitzpatrick<\/li>\n<li>LB Darius Snow<\/li>\n<li>DL Derrick Harmon<\/li>\n<li>OL Kevin Wigenton<\/li>\n<li>OL Ethan Boyd<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We will likely see plenty more hit the portal and I am here to say <em>that is OK<\/em>. The only player I\u2019m losing sleep over will be freshman linebacker Jordan Hall.<\/p>\n<h3>Here\u2019s why you shouldn\u2019t hit the panic button:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It was the plan all along\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s been reported by plenty of MSU insiders that the plan for most of the roster was to hit the portal once the season ended. Can you really blame them though? The majority of the coaching staff that brought them here is gone. At the end of the day, players are really committing to coaches vs. the school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Provides flexibility\n<ul>\n<li>Why wouldn\u2019t these players hit the portal? The best way to get a raise is to go to another job, not asking your current employer for a raise. In the world of NIL, the portal is another negotiating chip to ensure you\u2019re being paid what you\u2019re worth. It also gives the players time to decide if they like the new coaching staff or not.
