Tyson Walker has scored in double figures in 28 straight games. He’s just six games shy of breaking Michigan State’s record.

Tyson Walker is having a phenomenal season so far this year. Have you heard anyone else say that yet? The latest example showcasing his greatness is that he is inching closer to setting a program record.

Walker wasn’t at his best in Michigan State’s 73-55 win over Rutgers on Sunday. His average games, however, are still pretty good. Walker finished with 13 points, four assists, and two rebounds. His 13 points are what kept his double-digit scoring streak alive, taking him one game closer to setting a Michigan State program record.

Most consecutive double-digit scoring games in MSU history

Walker’s 13 points against Rutgers extended his double-digit scoring streak to 28 games. This ties him with Denzel Valentine for second most in program history and puts him five games away from tying the record (33 games) set by Kalin Lucas.

Tyson’s last game failing to hit double digits came last season on Jan. 29 at Purdue when he finished with nine points. Two games prior, he also failed to hit double digits, only scoring eight against Indiana. If Walker successfully hit double figures on both of those games, his streak would currently be at a whopping 37.

If everything goes according to plan, Walker will tie the record set by Kalin Lucas on Feb. 3 against Maryland. The following game at Minnesota on Feb. 6 would be when he sets the new program record.

This feat shows Tyson’s growth this season

Walker extending his streak this long shows his growth and development from last season to this year. He failed to hit double digits five times last year, which is extremely impressive on its own. This year, however, he has been perfect at reaching double digits each game.

This tells me that Walker has raised the floor of his game. By this, I mean his worst games aren’t as bad as they were a season ago. This tells me more than his games where he has exploded and scored in the mid-20s. This shows me that Walker is becoming a more consistent player versus someone who is more streaky. That is exactly what you want to see from the leader and best player.

Can Walker keep the streak going? He has a chance to be in second place on his own Thursday night when the Spartans take on Minnesota at the Breslin Center.
