After week off, Michigan State hockey is closing in on history
Four games stand between MSU hockey and program history.
Michigan State hockey got a much-needed break this past weekend but it’s not on the verge of making history.
Make no mistake, Michigan State hockey is in the middle of a remarkable season. We all can agree what Adam Nightingale and the boys have accomplished so far this year has been impressive, to say the least. As the regular season winds down, the team finds itself in a spot in which it’s never been before. After this bye, the next few weekends loom large and MSU is close to potentially clinching its first ever Big Ten title.
Coming into the weekend, Michigan State was off but a big series was taking place in Columbus.
Wisconsin came into this weekend trailing MSU in the Big Ten standings with two games in hand. The Buckeyes have not had the best season so far and were sitting at just one conference win going into the series. The Buckeyes, however, did the unthinkable and were able to sweep Wisconsin to give the Spartans an even better shot to bring home their first Big Ten hockey title.
Here are the standings as of Monday afternoon (Feb. 19):
- MSU (14-4-2)
- Wisconsin (13-6-1)
- Minnesota (12-6-4)
- Notre Dame (9-11-2)
- Michigan (8-10-1)
- Penn State (5-12-3)
- Ohio State (3-15-1)
As you can see, the Spartans are up one game in the conference win column and two games in the loss column. Michigan State has four games left in the regular season. Coming up this weekend, the Spartans have their final two home games at Munn. The last home series is against Ohio State on Friday and Saturday. After that, the first weekend of March will see the Spartans to travel to Wisconsin to take on the Badgers for the Big Ten title.
To prepare for the big weekend, Michigan State hockey is already calling upon Spartan Nation for a big turnout. On Saturday night at Munn Arena, the Spartans are calling for a green and white night on senior day.
