Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Michigan and Michigan State football were involved in a post-game scuffle that will likely be brought in front of the right people and a decision will be made on proper punishments.
Oh you have heard that before?
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s break down what happened for those who didn’t see it:
- Anthony Jones and Colston Loveland got into a shoving match after the final kneel-down.
- Jones put Loveland in a headlock after the Michigan tight end got in his face.
- Later, the cameras panned to a post-game scuffle where it look like Kalel Mullings was kicking or stomping someone.
It was yet another ugly incident in this rivalry that shows that the two sides just hate each other. Jonathan Smith got introduced to the ugly side of the rivalry and now says that he won’t forget whaat happened.
While it’s great to hear that from the leader of the program, it would be great to have the same energy that Jim Harbaugh did during the tunnel incident a couple of years ago. He wanted criminal charges brought on to all eight players involved when it was just one who deserved that treatment.
On Monday, Alan Haller told the media that he spoke to the Big Ten and the conference is looking into the post-game incident.
Haller said that he’s not going to call for criminal charges because he thought it was more of a sportsmanship issue like the tunnel incident (minus the swinging helmet) was a couple of years ago. And he’s right. This is a rivalry and things get chippy. No need to file charges and try to ruin a kid’s life because he made a mistake in a heated moment. But punishment needs to be levied if it is found that he stomped or kicked someone.
Let’s hope the Big Ten holds Michigan to the same standard it held Michigan State to.
