Michigan State football landed its first 2027 commit on Sunday. What does Savior Owens bring to the table?

After Michigan State basketball’s second-largest Big Ten victory in program history over Maryland on Saturday, another “Pat Signal” appeared—this time from Pat Fitzgerald’s Twitter account.

Jan. 24 was junior day for Michigan State football. An entire section of the lower bowl was closed off for the football program to use for recruits, and their families during the basketball game. Multiple Michigan State football coaches and recruits were watching the game up close, and that clearly had an impact on some of the prospects who were on a visit.

Savior Owens, a 2027 running back from Massillon, Ohio, committed to the Spartans shortly after the basketball game, and becomes the first player to join Michigan State’s 2027 recruiting class. Owens was unranked on all recruiting sites when he committed, but shortly after Owens announcement, the Ohio product was officially ranked on 247Sports.

Owens is ranked as a three-star prospect, currently No. 722 nationally, the No. 59 running back, and the No. 26 player in his home state of Ohio. Besides Michigan State, Owens held offers from other schools like Wisconsin, Toledo and UConn, amongst others.

Standing 5-foot-11, 215 pounds, Owens brings size and a supreme athleticism to the Spartans’ offense. Although Owens is on the smaller size, his quick acceleration off the line and vision in small gaps make him a dangerous threat in the backfield.

The first words that comes to mind with Owens are “bowling ball”. Once Owens starts moving downhill, it’s really hard to straight up stop him. In Owens’ junior season, for example, he had 222 carries for 1,579 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns, which led to being named to the all-county first, all-district first, and all-state first teams in Ohio.

Owens will most likely redshirt when he arrives in East Lansing for his first season.

With a heavy-competitive running back room after Cam Edwards and Jaziun Patterson graduate, Owens will have to compete with then-senior running back Brandon Tullis, junior running back Marvis Parrish, and redshirt sophomore running back Jace Clarizio.
