Mike Elko was on the set when College GameDay brought up the open Michigan State football job. It was quite the scene.
We seemingly can’t go one day without talking about the vacant Michigan State football coaching job. Not even on game day.
In fact, ESPN’s College GameDay was in Durham, N.C., this morning to talk about some Duke vs. Notre Dame action tonight and they did a segment where they talked about random storylines from around college football.
The “College GameDay Dashboard” stopped on a storyline that’s close to home.
“Who should be the next head coach at Michigan State?”
Pat McAfee immediately lit up, walked over to the edge of the set, and pointed at someone off camera. The camera panned over, and it was Duke head coach Mike Elko. Pretty funny stuff.
When McAfee pointed at Elko and the camera panned over to the Duke head coach, he immediately shook his head and gave a thumbs down. The crowd booed and Elko just laughed it off, but it was clear he was uncomfortable with being in the spotlight on GameDay for that reason. He’s busy worrying about leading his team to a win over Duke and he can’t escape the Michigan State talk.
That’s probably going to follow him throughout the rest of the season. He’s arguably the top name on the Michigan State football coaching search board and that’ll continue as long as he keeps winning.
If he can beat Notre Dame on Saturday night, the Elko hype will be through the roof.
An interesting answer to that question posed on GameDay came from Kirk Herbstreit who said that Jeff Monken or Matt Campbell should be the next head coach. Not sure that I agree. Actually, I definitely don’t agree.
We’re still months away from really finding out who Michigan State’s next head coach will be, but it’s clear that even Elko knows that he’s heavily mentioned in this process.
If you’re anything like me, you’re rooting for Elko against Notre Dame.
