Draymond Green had yet another meltdown on Wednesday night as he was ejected less than four minutes into the game.
Is there a more polarizing figure in the NBA right now than Draymond Green? The former Michigan State basketball star is constantly in the news nowadays, but for all the wrong reasons.
Draymond has always been someone that plays with his heart on his sleeve and is someone who isn’t afraid to get after it with his opponents and officials. That’s one of the reasons why he has had an extremely successful NBA career. Recently, however, it seems he has been taking things too far, and Wednesday night was yet another example of that.
The Golden State Warriors took on Orlando on Wednesday and Draymond received two technicals and was ejected from the game.
In the NBA this isn’t really a big deal, especially for a player like Draymond. But when you look at the play right before his ejection it makes no sense why Green reacted the way he did.
The play Draymond was arguing seemed like a very normal foul. It could have been a previous play that he was upset over that he waited to voice his displeasure about. This ejection also happened less than four minutes into the game which you hardly ever see. I could see this happening later in the game if there were a lot of questionable calls throughout the game, but this was at the beginning of the game and likely the first questionable call made.
It’s just a very strange time to react this way, especially when multiple teammates were pulling him away from the ref after his first tech.
This has become a pattern
As I mentioned, last night really wouldn’t be that big of a deal for the average player, but Draymond isn’t an average player. He has a history. Earlier this season, Green was suspended for 12 games after the below incident with Phoenix Suns player Jusuf Nurkic.
This play itself didn’t give him his suspension, it was due to repeated behaviors leading up to this play. Another example was during the 2022 offseason when Green had this altercation with teammate Jordan Poole.
I’m not suggesting that Green changes the way he plays basketball. This fire he plays with is one of the reasons why he and the Warriors have been a dynasty in the NBA for a decade now. But I do think he needs to choose his battles more carefully. Green is too valuable of a player to not be on the court all game for the Warriors.
Green likely won’t receive a punishment for his latest incident on Wednesday, but if he keeps this pattern up he could be on his way to another suspension.
