Gabe Brown joins his former recruiting classmate Marcus Bingham in beginning their overseas careers.
Just a week after the NBA Summer League ended, and days after Marcus Bingham Jr. signed with the Israel professional league, former Michigan State basketball starter Gabe Brown has an announcement of his own. He will be following suit and taking his professional career over to Europe. It was announced via Instagram that Brown will be joining the Italian club Openjobmetis Varese of the Lega Basket Serie A.
Brown’s NBA career has been split, with both Raptors’ and Suns’ G-League
After going undrafted, Gabe Brown signed with and has spent most of his career thus far with the Toronto Raptors G-League. Averaging over 23 minutes per night, Brown had performed pretty well with the Raptors 905. He would average a respectable 12.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. However, where he shined brightest was in his 41 percent shooting from deep. This should be no surprise, however, as that is exactly what Brown did for Michigan State. Gabe used his three point shooting and elite athletic ability to lead the Spartans for three years in East Lansing. Upon the conclusion of last season, Brown joined the Phoenix Suns Summer League team. During his five Summer League games, he averaged 8.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, but only 20 percent from deep.
Taking his talents overseas to the Lega Basket Serie A
Opting not to continue in the NBA, Brown will head over to Italy and suit up for a new team. Openjobmetis Varese finished last season in the middle of the pack, at 17-13. Sitting at 6th in the standings, Brown will bring three point shooting and electric finishes to his new Italian team. Only having an average team height of of 6-foot-4 and shooting 36 percent from deep, Brown will be a welcome addition in both regards for his new club. Openjobmetis Varese will hope to use Brown to get them over the hump, and challenge both AX Armani Exchange Milano and Virtus Segafredo Bologna for the top spot in the Italian league.
Gabe will join the likes of Cassius Winston, Marcus Bingham Jr., Matt Costello, Gavin Schilling, and Javon Bess as former Michigan State basketball players who have taken their talents overseas.
