On Wednesday, Michigan State basketball saw their 2026 class shape up a bit more. With Midnight Madness just around the corner, Tom Izzo locked down the commitment of 2026 four-star Julius Avent, the No. 78 overall prospect in his class, per the 247Sports Composite.

What to know about Michigan State basketball’s newest commit

Avent chose the Spartans over Xavier and Seton Hall. The 6-foot-7 prospect from New Jersey also visited Penn State and Providence, but neither made the cut for his top three. It is also worth noting that Avent elected to lock in his decision with the Spartans prior to officially visiting Seton Hall. In fact, Avent was slated to begin his official visit to the New Jersey college on the day he announced his commitment.

Avent is ranked as the No. 16 power forward prospect in his class via 247Sports. The Composite views him slightly more favorably, slotting him at No. 13 among power forwards in the class.

He originally visited Michigan State on August 30, attending the Spartans’ first football game with Tom Izzo and crew. Izzo later returned the favor, visiting Avent and New York prospect Jasiah Jervis last week.

Speaking of Jervis, he is another prospect the Spartans are applying a full-court press on to land to round out the 2026 class.

As it stands, Avent joins four-star point guard Carlos Medlock Jr. as pledges to the Spartans for 2026. The Spartans are also set to host Jalyn Collingwood and Ethan Taylor for Midnight Madness this Friday.

With Izzo also seeing to tease being around for the long haul during a recent media session, all news regarding Michigan State basketball has been positive in recent days.

How does the roster shape up?

Looking forward to 2026, Avent joins a forward room that is set to compose of Cam Ward, Jordan Scott, Kaleb Glenn (who will be coming off a leg injury that will force him to miss all of this year), Jesse McCulloch, Coen Carr, and the Walton twins, Colin and Brennan. While this is a long, long time in the future, the 2026 forward room looks stacked, and young. Outside of Carr, every player in that room will have a minimum of two years of eligibility left.

Michigan State Media and Information Management Class of '22. Emmett covers primarily football, recruiting, and basketball for Spartan Shadows, alongside writing for Detroit Lions on SI. He has also written for Spartan Avenue, Basic Blues, and Hail WV.
