Michigan State basketball likely out of Trey Townsend sweepstakes

Michigan State basketball is no longer getting a visit from Trey Townsend. According to reports, he’s not taking any more visits.

The transfer portal hasn’t been overly kind to Michigan State basketball so far this offseason, but Tom Izzo has been trying to change that.

Good news about Frankie Fidler could be coming and there were rumors of a visit from Trey Townsend this week, but that no longer seems to be the case after a late-night news dump by Tony Paul revealed that he’s no longer taking any more trips.

Updated post: Oakland’s Trey Townsend — a hot commodity on the transfer market — no longer is planning to visit Michigan State; he has spoken to Tom Izzo. Townsend has no more visits planned. Visits included Michigan, Arizona, Ohio State. He did *not* end up visiting Louisville.

Michigan State was hoping to get a visit and there was a good chance that Izzo could have won him over much like he seemed to do with Fidler, but something in the recruitment changed. Did he just not like the idea of playing the four in a lineup with Fidler, Jaden Akins, and Xavier Booker? It makes sense, I suppose. It’s not the most ideal lineup construction, but that’s a starting five that could compete for a Big Ten title.

Maybe he likes the pitch that Jake Diebler and Ohio State had more. He could become a star in that lineup.

Spartan fans are hoping that Fidler can be the addition at the three and then Izzo goes portaling for a center. There have still been zero centers that have been reached out to — at least publicly. And that’s concerning. That was the weakest position group this past season and the Spartans lost Mady Sissoko to the portal. There’s no way Izzo believes that Booker will be able to play center in the Big Ten for 25-30 minutes per game. He’s more of a four.

That’s another issue for another day, though.

Getting Townsend would have been nice, especially as a replacement for Malik Hall. Their games are similar and Townsend would’ve translated nicely to the Big Ten. Unfortunately, he may be playing for another Big Ten contender next year.
