Michigan State basketball fans are closely monitoring the progress of Jeremy Fears and they had a positive update on Saturday.
Michigan State basketball guard Jeremy Fears is still on the road to recovery after being shot in his hometown around the holidays. But it looks like he is improving much faster than expected.
During warmups before the Spartans’ 63-54 win over Maryland, Fears once again was on the court getting some work in. Before the Michigan game, Fears was seen getting some shots up on the Breslin Center court. However, Jeremy was stationary while shooting and wasn’t jumping, so it appeared he still had a long way to go in his recovery.
However, before the Maryland game he was on the move and being more active in warmups, rather than just shooting in one spot.

As you can see in the above video, Fears is moving extremely well. He’s moving laterally as well and some quick change of directions is a great sign for his recovery.
He still isn’t jumping when shooting, so I’m assuming he still is unable to do that. But seeing how well he’s doing in every other aspect, I’m guessing that will come in no time.
Could we expect to see Fears play this season?
My first thought after seeing the above video was if Fears might be back before the season is over. But the more I think about it, I still don’t think it will happen. First of all, the fact that he isn’t jumping when shooting makes me think he still has a ways to go in his recovery.
We also need to factor in the timing of when he could return. If his injury happened early in the season, I think he likely would be back in time. But with the season coming to an end soon, it might not be a smart idea to rush him back. Fears playing too soon could make him re-injure himself. But having him rejoin the team this late in the season could mess up the team’s flow as well.
I’m not saying Fears playing would make Michigan State a worse team, but it’s a process whenever anyone gets back from injury. No team can flip a switch and be back to their normal selves whenever someone returns. So Fears coming back right before postseason play might not be the best idea for the team as a whole.
Regardless of whether Jeremy plays this season or not, all that matters is his recovery continues to go well. And as it looks from the above video, it looks like that’s happening.
