We see teams play at smaller arenas all the time so why shouldn’t Michigan State basketball have a game at the historic Jenison Field House?
Michigan State basketball has played almost all of its home games at the Breslin Center since 1989. The team used to play at Jenison Field House, but that venue became to small to fit the growing demand to watch the Spartan basketball team play.
However, in recent years many teams across the country have gone back in time and played at their old arenas. Penn State just recently did this in their upset win over Illinois and Ole Miss has done it as well.
So that got me thinking, should Michigan State play a game at Jenison Field House?
Should MSU play at Jenison Field House once again?
Since the Spartans officially moved to the Breslin Center in 1989, they’ve returned to Jenison Field House for one game. Some of you may remember this as MSU played Tuskegee University on December 15, 2012, and the women’s team followed suit and played IPFW at Jenison one day later.
I unfortunately wasn’t at this game, but everything I’ve heard about it sounds spectacular. Sure the venue isn’t as great as Breslin and there are definitely some seating areas that don’t have a great view, but the history in this building in my opinion makes it all worth it.
So many historic teams played at Jenison back in the day. Magic Johnson led Michigan State to their first national championship during the 1979 season in this building. That feeling playing in this gym would be indescribable knowing all the history that has taken place in the building.
AJ Hoggard is on board
With the recent game being played at Penn State’s old venue, that brought up a lot of discussion on social media hoping MSU would do the same. AJ Hoggard even weighed in, saying he wishes they would do it.
If you have the players support in doing this, I don’t see why you wouldn’t. Sure this might upset some fans because not as many fans can attend. This also would mean one less game for season ticket holders as well.
But frankly, who cares about any of that. We’re talking just one game here and I’m not even suggesting making it an annual tradition (which by the way I think most players and fans would love).
Michigan State hasn’t ever had serious talks of doing this since 2012. But they have played many games in exciting and unique venues before, so I wouldn’t put it past them to play another game at Jenison.
