On April 1, nothing is traditionally taken seriously in the college basketball world. Swirling rumors about NIL numbers, potential players transferring, and schools “reaching out” to certain athletes cause all sorts of confusion, especially on April Fool’s Day. This year, that has changed as news has picked up in recent hours regarding Michigan State basketball.
Junior guard Tre Holloman announced through his agents earlier on Tuesday morning that he will enter the transfer portal. Of course, that doesn’t mean he has ruled out returning to East Lansing for his senior year, but entering the portal to test the waters traditionally means finding a new home in today’s game.
Averaging 9.1 points per game, 3.7 assists, and almost one steal per game are encouraging numbers for lower-rated programs. But Holloman’s skills aren’t always shown in the stats.
Before the season, Tom Izzo allowed his players to vote on a team captain for the upcoming year. The consensus vote was senior Jaden Akins; however, Izzo saw fit to appoint Holloman as a captain himself.
The senior guard began the year as a bench player, until Izzo slid him into the lineup against North Carolina to upset the Tar Heels back in November. Many Spartan fans will remember his key plays that helped Michigan State basketball go on its 13-game win streak, which propelled them to the top of the Big Ten.
Holloman repeatedly kept his spirits high, even when benched by his head coach in favor of a young freshman guard. Maybe that’s why so many Spartan fans were shocked to hear the news earlier this morning.
Arizona State is the main school being rumored currently, but once again, that is only a rumor. Nothing confirmed has come out yet today about Holloman’s potential landing spots.
Wherever the young guard plays ball next year, he will be widely accepted by the team’s fanbase.
