Michigan State football addresses another need in transfer portal at CB

Two days, four transfer commitments for Michigan State football.

Folks, Jonathan Smith is cooking in the portal.

After landing Omari Kelly from Middle Tennessee and Luka Vincic from Oregon State on Sunday, the first-year head coach went out and addressed more needs on Monday in the form of Chrishon McCray from Kent State and Joshua Eaton from Texas State.

BREAKING: #MichiganState has landed transfer CB Joshua Eaton from Texas State.

He had 49 tackles and 13 pass breakups as a two-year starter with the Bobcats. In 2024, he gave up 17 catches / 264 yds.

It’s been quite the past 48 hours for Smith and Co. as the Spartans have seemingly rounded out their receiving corps in the portal with two all-conference wideouts from the MAC and Conference USA. They also added a projected starter on Oregon State’s offensive line at guard next season while addressing some depth issues at cornerback in Eaton from Texas State.

While Eaton wasn’t named an all-conference performer this past season with the Bobcats, he has been a starter for the past two seasons and had a pretty good showing this year, allowing just 17 catches for 264 yards all year. That’s not too shabby. He helped lead Texas State to a bowl game.

Eaton started his career at Oklahoma where he was a four-star recruit in the 2020 class and played for the Sooners for a couple of seasons before debuting for Texas State in 2023. He started for the Bobcats and had eight pass breakups over the past two seasons but is still waiting for his first career interception. Hopefully that comes in the green and white.

This feels like a safe addition for Michigan State in the secondary as it will allow for some young guys to grow like Chance Rucker and others while still adding a veteran with experience and production.

As I said, Eaton becomes the fourth transfer addition for the Spartans in the past two days and it feels like Smith is really only getting started after signing a relatively small 2025 class.
