Michigan State football announces future series with Notre Dame

Fans got some good news on Thursday as Michigan State football announced a future home-and-home with Notre Dame.

It was announced on Thursday that Notre Dame and Michigan State football have officially scheduled a home-and-home series. That’s right, we will see the once yearly rivalry game restored for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.

Per the schedule release, the first game of the series is slated to take place in South Bend in 2026. The teams will come back and visit Spartan Stadium the following year. This will take up one of the three Spartan non-conference games each season.

Over the course of the rivalry, this game has produced some of the most iconic moments in college football. Who could forget the 1966 game which featured No. 1 MSU vs. No. 2 Notre Dame. That game ended in a tie and has been dubbed “The Greatest Game of All Time”. The 2006 game where Notre Dame erased a big late game deficit to come back and win 40-37. That game prompted the infamous “make plays!” rant by Detroit radio host Mike Valenti. Then, of course, “Little Giants” in 2010. One of the most iconic endings to any college football game out there.

The Spartans last faced the Irish back in 2017 in East Lansing. Notre Dame was victorious then however the Spartans beat them in 2016 in South Bend. Overall, Notre Dame holds the edge in the all time series 47-29-1.

I, for one, am super excited to see Michigan State football and Notre Dame face off once again. Kudos to Jonathan Smith and Marcus Freeman for renewing the game. Hopefully it can be played as much as possible again.
