Former Michigan lineman Trente Jones gave Michigan State football some credit in regards to the Spartan Stadium environment.
It’s almost time for some Michigan State football.
Fans everywhere are rejoicing because the countdown to the 2024 regular season is just weeks away and we’re in the home stretch where there happens to be just two more Saturdays without college football.
With football back, that means fans will pack Spartan Stadium for the opener against FAU and even though 2024 expectations aren’t incredibly high, we can expect a good turnout and electric atmosphere for the start of the Jonathan Smith era.
Spartan Stadium is, in fact, electric most of the time unless it’s a November home game with no bowl to fight for.
While rival fans like to poke fun at Spartan Stadium for its lackluster crowds over the past two seasons, former Michigan offensive lineman Trente Jones, who won three straight Big Ten titles and a national championship with the Wolverines, had some high praise for the atmosphere.
He posted his Big Ten stadium tiers in terms of loudness on Thursday and it may have surprised some people.
Jones has “can’t hear in the huddle” as the top tier with Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio State, and Penn State leading the list. But the very next level is “can’t hear the person next to you” which is highlighted by Michigan State to go along with Oregon and USC. I’m surprised Oregon isn’t higher, but to be fair, Jones hasn’t played there in his career.
One tier lower is “either really loud or really quiet” and Michigan appears there with Wisconsin and Washington. Those are two more surprises because Spartan fans know how loud Husky Stadium can get (2022 game brings back nightmares) and Wisconsin is known for being raucous.
“The tackles can talk to each other” tier includes Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, Rutgers, Purdue, and UCLA and they’re followed by “the QB can talk to the sideline” which is Maryland and Northwestern. Can’t be surprised by any of those.
But respect to Jones to mentioning that Spartan Stadium can be electric and he saw that firsthand in the 2021 game.
