Michigan State football, Evan Young

On Saturday, Michigan State football dropped to 3-4 on the year following a 13-38 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers. While not great by any means, this loss was closer than what was being predicted pre-game. However, with the game still being a four-score deficit late, a few freshmen did get to make their debut and join the list of who has played for the Spartans.

The freshmen also had a few more players make the travel roster for the first time. Here is who traveled to Bloomington. Players italicized traveled for the first time in their careers with Michigan State football.

  • QB Leo Hannan
  • WR Bryson Williams
  • WR Charles Taplin
  • DL Derrick Simmons
  • LB Leonard Ah You
  • DB Aydan West
  • DB George Mullins
  • DB Deuce Edwards
  • DB Evan Young
  • LS Jack Wills

Which freshmen played for Michigan State football in week 8?

Jack Wills, LS

Wills again retained his hold on the long snapping position with Kaden Schickel out. Wills had a slightly high snap on the first field goal of the game, but it went through just fine. Martin Connington’s one missed kick did not come from a bad snap. Full marks after that first snap for Wills.

Aydan West, DB

West rotated in this week, after starting against UCLA. West was picked on by Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, with the true freshman giving up a pair of touchdowns in the second half. For one of those, it is hard to blame West, Mendoza had a perfect throw.

Jonathan Smith showed confidence in the defensive back post game, stating that he thinks West will be a really good player for the Spartans in the future.

Evan Young, DB

For the first time since Jayden Savoury’s debut in week two, a new Spartan is added to the list! Evan Young was called upon for a single special teams snap in the second half, being on punt coverage. Young ate up two blockers on the return, although IU’s returner managed 16 yards.

Bryson Williams, WR

Williams has been a gadget, do-it-all player in pre-game warmups, and the freshman became the first member of the talented 2025 trio to see the field on Saturday. Williams was called upon and instantly targeted on his first career snap, taking the ball eight yards to set up a short third down attempt that was converted.

It is worth noting that Williams is the youngest of the freshmen, with the Orchard Lake (MI.) product playing this season at 17 years old. Not bad to be breaking into the Big Ten at this age.

Two other freshman, Simmons and Savoury, have each appeared in games this year. Simmons played the first three games of the year, and Savoury played in four contests. Recently, Savoury has been on the injury report. With Savoury out, it is worth mentioning they could elect to redshirt the freshman.
