Michigan State football “in the mix” for two high-level transfer WRs

These would be massive additions.

If you were worried about Jonathan Smith’s 2025 recruiting class, all you have to do is turn your attention to the quality of players he’s been after in the transfer portal thus far. In fact, Michigan State football is “in the mix” for a couple of high-level transfer receivers.

The first is former top-100 wideout Malachi Coleman from Nebraska.

Coleman was the No. 63 overall recruit and No. 11 receiver prospect in the 2023 recruiting class. He played in 11 games with six starts as a true freshman in 2023, catching eight passes for 139 yards and a touchdown. He has the prototypical size for a go-to target in the receiving corps, standing 6-foot-5 and weighing in at 210 pounds. Coleman could be a fantastic addition to the starting corps alongside Nick Marsh.

How many defenses are going to have an answer for two solid-sized receivers with athleticism like Coleman and Marsh have? Add a third speedy wideout to that starting lineup and Aidan Chiles has himself elite weaponry.

The other high-level receiver Michigan State offered this week was DT Sheffield from North Texas. This could be the speedy wideout that I was talking about as he was one of the best that the AAC had to offer.

Sheffield was one of the most electric pass-catchers in the AAC this past season, earning all-conference honors after catching 66 passes for 822 yards and 11 touchdowns. He is the kind of receiver that would complement Marsh and really put pressure on defenses. He can take the top off of a defense.

Imagine a receiving corps with a 6-foot-3 Nick Marsh, a 6-foot-5 Malachi Coleman, and a speedster in Sheffield taking end-arounds and reverses while also blowing by defensive backs down the field. That would give the Spartans something worth bragging about.

With the receiving corps taking a major hit over the past week, these two offers are intriguing.

Let’s hope Jonathan Smith can close on at least one.
