Michigan State football loses another WR to the transfer portal

Earlier this week, Jaron Glover announced that he would be entering the transfer portal for the second time in his Michigan State football career. This time, it feels like Glover will be gone for good.

On Friday, the Spartans lost another receiver to the transfer portal.

This time, the departure comes in the form of promising freshman Aziah Johnson. The former three-star wideout from Richmond, Va., has reportedly decided to enter the portal after catching 16 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns this year.

This comes as a bit of a surprise, especially given the fact that he had a large role as a true freshman this year and Glover is moving on. On top of that, Montorie Foster Jr. is graduating and the status of guys like Alante Brown and Antonio Gates Jr. are up in the air. You don’t often see guys who played large roles as freshmen and were expecting even more playing time the following season to move on, but maybe he wants to be closer to home.

Or maybe he wants to be the WR1 on a smaller team in the Group of Five. We have seen former Spartans go that route as Ricky White (UNLV) and Christian Fitzpatrick (Marshall) led their respective teams in receiving this past season. For White, it was his second straight year of 1,000 receiving yards and Fitzpatrick seemed to find a new home at Marshall.

Johnson is probably hoping for the same luck after learning from Courtney Hawkins this year.

This is a tough loss for the offense because it felt like Johnson could carve out a nice role alongside Nick Marsh next season with all of the departures, but now he’ll be testing the waters and looking for a better scenario.

The receiver room is essentially Marsh and a bunch of unproven wideouts for 2025.
