On Thursday, Michigan State football revealed their practice squad players of the week. This tradition dates back to at least the Mark Dantonio era, although it was discontinued under Mel Tucker, at least publicly. Jonathan Smith announces the players publicly on social media, not afraid to give the hard-working players some well-deserved recognition.

Scout Team Players of the Week

For the second week straight, Smith handed out the award to five Spartans. Those five are:

  • Redshirt freshman TE Charlie Baker
  • Redshirt freshman DT Mikeshun Beeler
  • Redshirt freshman DB Keshawn Williams
  • True freshman DB Deuce Edwards
  • Redshirt freshman OL Payton Stewart

None of these players repeat from week one of the season, but two of the redshirt freshmen won the award in 2024.

Charlie Baker won the award twice last season, including an award preparing for last year’s Boston College matchup. Evidently, the tight end does a great job imitating one of the Eagles. Baker is a homegrown product, hailing from East Lansing High School.

Mikeshun Beeler is the other repeat winner, after getting the accolade once last year. Beeler drew some strong reviews during camp, but the upperclassmen on the depth chart appear to have relegated the Illinois native to the scout team for now. Beeler did dress for last week’s game, however.

The other three all won the award for the first time in their young careers.

Keshawn Williams entered the program as a summer enrollee in 2024 and looks to make an impact last year. He hopes to follow the footsteps of high school teammate Jaylen Thompson, who started a few games for MSU before transferring closer to home after last season.

Deuce Edwards started the pattern of flipping ACC players for the Spartans, as the cousin of Spartan great Felton Davis III flipped from Virginia Tech last year. Edwards enters this year as a summer enrollee looking to make an impact, and now has earned an award for his hard work.

Payton Stewart followed Jonathan Smith from Oregon State, flipping his commitment to the Spartans late in the 2024 recruiting cycle. The former On3 four-star tackle is hoping to make his Michigan State football debut in the next few weeks, after dressing for his first game last week during the season opener.

In the last year, quite a few Spartans have gone from scout team stars to earning playing time, and these five are hopeful they are next up.
