On Saturday, during the final quarter of a 38-13 rout, Michigan State football threw freshman Bryson Williams in to make his collegiate debut. The state title winner for Orchard Lake (MI.) St. Mary’s was a player that had received some praise during the opening months of the season, but was stuck behind a plethora of upperclassmen on the depth chart. Between attrition and this being the second half of the season, the staff elected to play Williams.

In one of his first ever snaps, Williams was targeted and sprinted up field, turning a second and long into a third and short that got converted.

Nick Marsh offers praise for Bryson Williams

Nick Marsh was asked about Williams’ usage on Tuesday, and the sophomore star had plenty of praise for Williams. Marsh knows about the struggle to make the field as a true freshman, as that was his reality last season with a less loaded Michigan State football receiver room. However, he conceded that Williams has another element challenging the freshman, with work at both running back and wide receiver.

“Bryson, he’s actually doing something a little bit different,” Marsh said, reflecting on his time as a freshman compared to Williams’s. “He’s working with the running backs and receivers, so, you know, he’s seen a bit of the sides of both. Having him as an extra guy on both sides, running back and receiver is pretty good, man. He’s a guy on both sides.”

When asked specifically about the freshman’s talent as a player, Marsh contrasted his size with Williams’s, with the freshman being nearly the same size but having more weight on him due to the running back aspect.

“For him to be as big as he is and move the way he does, it’s not likely that you see it all the time. I’m a big kid, I can move pretty fast,” Marsh said. “Bryson’s probably like 10, 15 pounds heavier than me, and we can move about the same. That’s very special.”
