On Saturday, Michigan State football fell out of bowl contention with a 10-28 loss to the Nittany Lions on Senior Day. The Spartan offense could not muster up much, with Alessio Milivojevic being sacked five times. Overall, it was a day to forget.
That said, how did the Spartans rotate in? As always, starters are italicized. Snaps and percentages are out of the 49 credited offensive plays.
Quarterback
Alessio Milivojevic: (49) 100%
With Aidan Chiles in a boot, the redshirt freshman Milivojevic was assured to see all snaps unless injuries occurred. The Illinois native was battered around all game, but was able to finish the game out. However, this start was not his 300-yard outing against Minnesota.
Milivojevic finished with 128 passing yards on 17-of-27 attempts.
Running back
Elijah Tau-Tolliver: (31) 63%
Makhi Frazier: (12) 24.5%
Brandon Tullis: (6) 12%
Hello to the third starter of the season, with Tau-Tolliver taking the reins on Senior Day. The senior followed his Minnesota outing with a 57-yard house call to open the game, but only added five carries for 22 yards the rest of the game.
Frazier had the most carries, with eight, but only had 27 yards. He may not have been back to full strength after missing the Minnesota contest. Tullis, meanwhile added one carry for six yards.
Fullback
Jay Coyne: (0) 0%
For the first time all season, Michigan State football did not utilize I-formation.
Tight Ends
Jack Velling: (42) 86%
Michael Masunas: (24) 49%
In spite of it being Velling’s Senior Day, Masunas shined and got the start. Overall, Masunas had a solid day, with three catches for 29 yards while having superb run blocking. Velling had a day to forget, with a single catch and middle-of-the-pack grades.
Wide Receiver
Omari Kelly: (49) 100%
Nick Marsh: (42) 84%
Chrishon McCray: (23) 47%
Rod Bullard Jr.: (9) 18%
Evan Boyd: (7) 14%
Charles Taplin: (1) 2%
Kelly played an iron man day on his Senior Day, but did not contribute much on the stat sheet. Overall, the receiving core did not impress, with five catches for 15 yards in an entire game.
Offensive Line
Matt Gulbin: (49) 100%
Rustin Young: (49) 100%
Rakeem Johnson: (49) 100%
Caleb Carter: (49) 100%
Conner Moore: (49) 100%
A full iron man day for the offensive line, but not very memorable, with little separation and push after the first snap of the day. The opening touchdown came from seal blocks from Rakeem Johnson and Conner Moore, along with Michael Masunas at tight end.
Redshirt Freshman Rustin Young notably struggled against elite Penn State edge rusher Dani Dennis-Sutton, and recorded a 0.0 PFF grade in pass blocking.
What is next for Michigan State football?
They head out to Iowa to play the Hawkeyes in their last true road game of the year. It kicks off at 3:30 p.m. EST.
