Michigan State football will have the unfortunate task of facing Ohio State under the lights in The Shoe in November.
The Michigan State football Twitter account just announced that the Spartans will be facing off against Ohio State in primetime on NBC on Nov. 11.
The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. EST and will be broadcast front and center across the country on NBC. This is huge news for the program as it is always massive to get a game on primetime. This increases our exposure on the national scale but unfortunately it comes against one of the best teams in the country with expectations for the upcoming season on the lower end.
This announcement has come with some negativity from the fanbase as they are fearful of what might happen in the game. It’s no secret that Ohio State is the premier program in the Big Ten and one of the best in the country, and that has many Spartan fans fearful we’ll be beaten handily on national TV. An upset would go a long way, but that hasn’t happened under Mel Tucker yet.
On paper that upset seems unlikely and recent history in this matchup also confirms that. MSU has not beaten Ohio State since the magical last-second field goal by Michael Geiger in 2015 that propelled the Spartans to a Big Ten title and playoff appearance. Doing the math, that makes seven straight wins for Ohio State in this series.
Don’t let that scare you Spartan fans, as MSU is known for pulling off upsets in this matchup and has done so many times, including in 1974 when MSU went into Columbus and beat the No. 1 ranked Buckeyes. I say this all just to say that MSU has a chance, even if it is small, and the game being televised in a primetime spot makes it all the better.
Lastly, in today’s day and age, college football is all about exposure not just for your program but for athletes as well. NIL has only increased the exposure athletes desire, so Michigan State will be able to use this in its recruiting pitches to show future Spartans that their name and games will be out there for the entire country to see.
I, for one, am ecstatic about this opportunity and look forward to MSU giving the Buckeyes their best shot.
