The vibes within the Michigan State football program are the best they’ve been in years thanks to the new coaching staff.
Comradery has been missing from this Michigan State football team for the last five years and I don’t think we even noticed.
Jonathan Smith changed that when he reshuffled the roster.
The team is having fun at fall camp and it’s showing.
We saw so much content during the Mel Tucker era all the posts run together and honestly, the small things can easily be missed.
Photos are glanced at.
Videos are sped up.
Reports are skimmed.
But I still have difficulty recalling these moments during Tucker’s time – honest and genuine relationships within the roster. Sure, winning makes the optics look better. The Peach Bowl year brought a ton of that. It makes it hard to be critical of the little things.
We always saw players hanging out at Tucker’s house, but it still felt like something was missing.
Seemingly, Tucker led a divided locker room. The program’s NIL structure appeared to split the team. Some players got paid big and others scraped by. Whether that was Tucker’s fault or just the state of college football, I’ll let you decide.
From an outsider’s perspective, it feels like Jonathan Smith healed the wound from the jump. That alone should make us all excited for this upcoming season.
The pay parity appears to be rectified.
The locker room appears unified.
And the players appear to love each other again.
Football is the ultimate team sport. You must excel in all three facets of the game. Each position group needs one another. No synergy means no winning. Sure, an elite quarterback can mask a lot of problems but not even Tom Brady is going to win being protected by an offensive line that can’t communicate or a defense that can’t guard a slant.
What I’m trying to say is that comradery can be an overlooked aspect of a team. From the outside, it appeared neglected in the past and the new regime has repaired it.
I was never in or around the locker room. I could be completely off base. I’m just sharing my opinion from the outside looking in.
I’m sure there are plenty of moments that I missed and you’re more than welcome to call me out. I just think they might be hard to find.
