On Saturday, Michigan State football revealed their injury report leading into their road game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. With the Spartans entering the game 3-5, it is do-or-die time for Jonathan Smith as rumors swirl on his employment. Who all is back and who is out for the Spartans as they look to emerge victorious over the team from the Twin Cities?

Who is OUT for Michigan State football?

Alante Brown, WR/Kick Returner

Brown has been out since a pregame injury against Youngstown State, and cannot play in the Minnesota contest. The Spartan will not be one providing a spark on the kick return game, where he will be sorely missed.

Marcellius Pulliam, LB

Pulliam remains out for another week. He stepped up in a big way against USC, with multiple linebackers out by halftime. However, he has not returned to the field since. He has played in four games so far.

Makhi Frazier, HB

Frazier is out for the first time this season. After rushing for a career-high 109 yards last week, he will not be following the effort up this week. This explains Zion Gist travelling this week, as revealed by MSU’s Instagram.

Ade Willie, Nickel Corner

Willie has also not been playing since the week four contest at USC with an undisclosed injury. This week is no different, and the Spartans are down a starter in the secondary for the eighth time in their nine games.

Chrishon McCray, WR/Kick Returner

McCray is also missing his first game of the season. McCray has over 250 yards and a touchdown on the season, but has not seen the role that was expected. He previously missed time with an undisclosed injury in fall camp. This leaves senior Rod Bullard Jr. as the expected WR3, alongside sophomore wideout Evan Boyd. It also puts MSU on to option four at kick return with Brown also out.

Jayden Savoury, TE

Savoury remains out another week. The tight end has played in four contests this year, and contributed a catch for 16 yards on his first career snap. He last played against Nebraska. It is increasingly likely the staff will redshirt the freshman now.

Tarik Ahmetbasic, K

Ahmetbasic is out for the ninth time in nine weeks. His injury was called a lower body injury, but not much has been disclosed about his status since Martin Connington took the starting kicker job in week two.

Kaden Schickel, LS

Schickel, much like Ahmetbasic, is out and has missed every game this season. Schickel tore his ACL against Michigan last year, and has been working to get back to playing. Jack Wills remains the starting long snapper as a true freshman.

Ben Roberts, DT

Ben Roberts is out after suffering an injury a few snaps into the Michigan game. He has been hampered in recent weeks, and something finally gave for the junior defensive tackle. He was called doubtful earlier in the week, and is indeed out.

Kristian Phillips, OG

Phillips is another starting guard out this week. He was one of the best pass blockers on the team, via PFF. With Phillips out and Vincic out for the season, the starting guards will remain as Gavin Broscious and Caleb Carter.

Stanton Ramil, OT

Ramil is out again after giving it a go against the Wolverines. He was shut down a few series in to the contest. This means that the Spartans likely give Rustin Young a start, unless they elect to play Rakeem Johnson. Regardless, expect the two redshirt freshman to see action this week.

Brennan Parachek, TE

Parachek, much like fellow tight end Jayden Savoury, has been out since the Nebraska contest. The junior will not be playing this week and leaves a spot open for junior tight end Kai Rios. Parachek also missed the week one contest against Western Michigan with injury. As a result, he has only played in four games and could redshirt if he cannot play the rest of the season.

Ru’Quan Buckley, DT

Buckley has seen an uptick in  snaps in recent weeks, but is out for this game against the Gophers. His absence leaves a hole at defensive tackle. Mikeshun Beeler has not dressed for previous games at home, which is something to monitor if he did not travel again. Perhaps Derrick Simmons plays his final game before being at risk of burning his redshirt eligibility.

Out for the Season, Week Ten

No new names have been added to the list of players out for the year, but here is the six pack of players that will not be suiting up the rest of the season, alongside their total games played.

  • EDGE Anelu Lafaele (Five games played)
  • DB Caleb Gash (One game played)
  • DB Andrew Brinson IV (Zero games played)
  • LB Brady Pretzlaff (Three games played)
  • OL Ashton Lepo (Four games played)
  • OL Luka Vincic (Two games played)

Who is back for the Spartans?

No one is back for MSU after missing the Michigan game. Nikai Martinez does remain off the injury report, as expected. Additionally, Jordan Hall is in for today’s game. That is the biggest news worth monitoring for who is back.

Michigan State Media and Information Management Class of '22. Emmett covers primarily football, recruiting, and basketball for Spartan Shadows, alongside writing for Detroit Lions on SI. He has also written for Spartan Avenue, Basic Blues, and Hail WV.
