With a few hours until kickoff, Michigan State football released their injury report before their premier matchup against Boston College. In a “must-win” situation, the Spartans are down a few players. Unlike last season, however, they have multiple receivers ready to play, such as sophomore phenom Nick Marsh.
Who is out for Michigan State football?
As revealed by Pete Thamel earlier this week, senior starting defensive back Nikai Martinez is out due to an undisclosed injury. After head coach Jonathan Smith was non-committal about Martinez’s status earlier in the week, the senior is out for tonight.
Additionally in the defensive back room, sophomore cornerback Andrew Brinson IV is out tonight. Nothing has been mentioned above what type of injury the defensive back has, but he will not be suiting up for the Spartans.
Senior long-snapper Kaden Schickel is still out for the Spartans, likely recovering from a leg injury suffered against the Michigan Wolverines last October. Freshman Jack Wills stepped up last week in Schickel’s absence, and will do the same today.
Sophomore kicker Tarik Ahmetbasic is also out today, as he looks to recover from an undisclosed injury.
Senior defensive tackle Jalen Satchell is out tonight after missing the opener. Much like the situation with Schickel, another freshman, Derrick Simmons, likely remains Satchell’s replacement.
The surprise on the injury report is sophomore defensive back Caleb Gash. The murder-man maniac on special teams for the Spartans against the Broncos will not retain the role against the Eagles. Dorian Davis and David Miliken are two veteran players with special teams experience that may be called upon.
Who is back for the Spartans?
As Thamel broke the news that Martinez was out, the reporter also mentioned that kicker Martin Connington would be healthy to play in a “limited” role tonight. Not much is known about what the limits are, but more will be assessed on the freshman’s status post-game.
Junior tight end Brennan Parachek is also back for the Spartans today. He missed the opener, and will split reps with Michael Masunas as TE2, most likely.
Junior offensive lineman Luka Vincic is not listed on the report, but he was not listed last Friday either.
While the Spartans are shorthanded, especially in the defensive back room, this team has a much healthier outlook than they did against the Eagles last season. In 2024, the Spartans were down two offensive linemen and four receivers in Chestnut Hill.
