On Thursday, Jonathan Smith made his game week post to honor the scout team players of the week for their efforts in preparation for Saturday’s game. This week is no ordinary week, as any Spartan fan, alumni, or player will tell you, as the preparation is for a contest against the bitter rival Michigan Wolverines.
Who were the players honored for their efforts in imitating the in-state rival to give Michigan State football some good looks?
Michigan State football scout team players of the week, week nine
- EDGE Stone Chaney (RS-Fr.)
- DB George Mullins (Fr.) (x3)
- DB Elisha West (RS-Fr.) (x2)
- OL Antonio Johnson (Fr.) (x3)
- WR Atticus Carridine (RS-So.) (x2)
- WR Shawn Foster (RS-So.) (x2)
Instead of the usual five players, Smith opted to give the award out to six players this week.
Stone Chaney played late against Prarie View A&M last year, showing pop in his debut with 1.5 tackles for loss in under a dozen snaps. Entering the season, he was the only player returning with edge rush experience from MSU in 2024. However, Chaney has yet to dress for a game this season. With his efforts on the practice field, that may be changing soon. This is the first time he has received the award in his career.
George Mullins wins the award for a team-high third time, joined by Antonio Johnson. Mullins was added to the travel roster for the first time for the Indiana game, which also had the freshman dress in uniform for the first time in his career. He was previously award last week and week six, before the Nebraska contest.
Elisha West transferred in from Merrimack this offseason to join his younger brother Aydan. The elder West has yet to dress for a game or travel this season, but earns the honor for a second time on the season. He was previously awarded in preparation before the USC contest.
Antonio Johnson joins Mullins as a three-time scout team player of the week this season. Johnson got some praise early in fall camp, and the summer enrollee has continued to build on his body of work. The Orchard Lake (MI.) St. Mary’s prospect hopes to be the third Eaglet alumni to hit the field for the Spartans this season, joining Bryson Williams and Jayden Savoury. Johnson has dressed for most home games this season. He previously won the award before the Youngstown State contest and the Nebraska game.
Atticus Carridine receives the accolade for the second time this season, joining his preparation before the Youngstown State game. Carridine has yet to make his debut for the Spartans, but has the distinction of winning the award at quarterback in 2024. He also played some scout team quarterback to prepare the team for Youngstown State’s running threat of Beau Brungard prior to week three.
Shawn Foster gets the award for a second time this season, joining his efforts before the week one contest against Western Michigan. Foster went on to make his debut in that game, playing on punt coverage later in the contest following an injury to Caleb Gash. Foster has dressed for every home contest this season. Previously, Foster won the award once last season prior to the Illinois contest.
With the preparations nearing completion, it now comes down to the team to show their muscle against Michigan at 7:30 p.m. EST on Saturday.
