Michigan State football commit Samson Gash has received an offer from a fellow Big Ten program. The Spartans have a fight on their hands.

It’s no secret that the Michigan State football program is on a downward decline.

Ever since the acclaimed 2021 season featuring Kenneth Walker, Michigan State has gone just 17-28 under three different head coaches. A flurry of controversy during the end of Mel Tucker’s reign, followed by a underwhelming effort during Harlon Barnett’s tenure, and then continued by current head coach Jonathan Smith, who has done little to elevate the program from when he inherited it.

The losses, both on and off the field, have led to a loss of confidence.  Not only from the players and fans, but recruits as well. Earlier this year, two of State’s highest-ranked recruits according to multiple online recruiting sites.

Braylon Hodge and Tyren Wortham, both four-star recruits, both decommitted from the Spartans earlier this season, and immediately received offers from a flurry of other schools and programs who were interested in their services.

Besides Hodge and Wortham however, no other Spartan commits have reopened their recruitment. That could change soon however, as Detroit Catholic Central senior and current Michigan State receiver commit Samson Gash has been active on the recruiting trail.

Gash is visiting Alabama this upcoming weekend for the Crimson Tide’s game against LSU. While the visit does not exactly mean Gash is interesting in committing, the No. 1 receiver in Michigan said, “Alabama is a great opportunity that can’t go right past me … I gotta look into it.”

After Gash announced his trip to Tuscaloosa, Wisconsin extended an offer to Gash, signaling an opening of interest for the Spartan commit. This, amongst other aspects of the program itself, is a sense of common concern within Michigan State’s fanbase. If the Spartans lose Gash to another program, let alone a Big Ten competitor, MSU’s 2026 recruiting could tank another step. And if that happens, it’s just another knock at the door for Smith’s eventual departure.

If Gash does announce a decommitment soon, that only leaves the Spartans with three-star receiver Zachary Washington on the board. In a conference loaded with receiving talent, the Spartans desperately need all the help they can get.
