Michigan State football will be hosting FCS All-American offensive lineman Luke Newman from Holy Cross on an official visit.
First off, Happy New Year, everyone. I hope you all had an awesome and safe holiday season. My New Year’s resolution is to watch more MSU sports. Everyone tries to ‘cut down on booze’ or ‘hit the gym’ or ‘lose X amount of weight’ so why not make your resolution to do something you love even more?Anyways, Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith and his staff are officially off and running on the recruiting trail in the new year.
On3 announced that Holy Cross offensive lineman Luke Newman will be taking an official visit to East Lansing at the end of this month.
You may be like me and have no real knowledge about the Holy Cross football program, and that’s OK. Holy Cross is over in Massachusetts, plays in the FCS division and has dominated their opponents for the last five years. They’ve won their conference every year since 2019.
Newman is a Michigan native and played his high school ball at Brother Rice in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Standing at 6-foot-4, 310 pounds, Newman earned All-American honors last season and hit the portal to either find himself a better opportunity at the collegiate level or declare for the NFL draft.
The outstanding lineman was a hot commodity when he originally hit the portal drawing interest from plenty of SEC and Big Ten schools. Newman narrowed his list down to MSU, Illinois, Purdue, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, among others. As it stands today, Vanderbilt is the frontrunner and holds a 247 Crystal Ball. With that said, Smith and offensive line coach Jim Michalczik must feel confident where they stand given Newman grew up just over 60 minutes away from East Lansing.
Keep an eye out for more movement on this one in the next couple weeks. Michalczik is doing his best to fill out the offensive line room prior to spring ball and has a head start with three linemen withdrawing from the portal.
