Zack, Chris, and Emmett are back with the weekly recap for the Spartan Shadows Podcast. In this, we break down the Western Michigan contest against Michigan State football. We provide our main takeaways, before jumping into the preview for Boston College.
Of note, this was recorded before news about Martin Connington and Nikai Martinez and their injury status was known. The Spartans enter their week two contest with a 1-0 record, but quite a few questions are unanswered after an opening night win. Chrishon McCray, Rod Bullard, and Evan Boyd each took reps as the third receiver in the game for Michigan State football, but combined for two targets and one catch for 28 yards.
Defensively, this unit looks much improved, but how much of it was an inexperienced Western Michigan line facing a barrage of blitzes? Against the Eagles, it is the first chance for the Spartans to make a statement. All three of us come to the same conclusion during the podcast. For Michigan State football, this is a “must-win” scenario. If the Spartans look to go bowling under Jonathan Smith, the Eagles must be defeated.
Lewis Bond presents a huge threat for the Spartans, but quarterback Dylan Lonergan has missed practice time this week. The No. 9 has practiced since, but could extra pressures be the ideal situation for the Spartans against a banged-up quarterback? We will find out on Saturday night.

Additionally, feel free to check out an episode recorded before the season opener, where Zack, Chris, and Emmett sat down with Steven and Ashleigh Collier to discuss their son, Braylon, and his recruiting process, his commitment to the Spartans, the sisterhood of the Spartan moms, and navigating the NIL world as Braylon Collier’s NIL Agents!
On behalf of the Podcast crew, thank you so much for 100 subscribers on YouTube, this means a ton to us as we sit down and talk Michigan State athletics weekly!
