The Week 3 opponent for Michigan State football just lost a key starter for the entire season, according to Kalen DeBoer.
The Week 3 opponent for Michigan State football lost a key player for the season, Kalen DeBoer announced on Tuesday.
Let me begin by first saying how awful injuries are in sports. I never want to see anyone get hurt from any team, even if Michigan State football plays them.
However, Bruce Feldman, a reporter with The Athletic, confirmed today that Washington starting running back Cam Davis is out for the season with an injury. He did not specify what the injury is, but it must be significant if he is done for the year.
2022 season
Davis had a great season for the Huskies last year. He totaled 107 carries for 522 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. Those 13 rushing touchdowns led the Huskies last season. Cam also accounted for 19 receptions for 137 yards, proving that he is threat both on the ground and through the air. He also had a solid game against MSU last season that saw him accumulate 17 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown. He also had one reception during the game as well showing he gave us all that we could handle.
2023 outlook
This is a significant loss for Washington this season. Cam was likely going to be the starting running back for the top-10 Huskies this season. He proved last year how well he could play, and he would have no doubt been a handful this year. However, by no means does this mean Michigan State will beat the Huskies in Week 3.
The Huskies have plenty of other threats on the offensive end that will be tough for us to handle. Led by quarterback Michael Penix Jr., the Huskies are returning 14 of 22 starters. Penix Jr. has been a lot to handle for us dating back to his time at Indiana, so I don’t see him slowing down anytime soon. Washington also returns two of the best receivers in the country as well. Receivers Rome Ondunze and Jalen McMillan both accounted for 75-plus receptions and over 1,000 yards last season. Don’t forget Spartan transfer receiver Germie Bernard who left East Lansing for the Huskies this offseason.
Week 3 is going to be a fun one in East Lansing. The first big game of the year will see a top-10 opponent visit East Lansing. If Mel Tucker and Michigan State can find a way to win this game, the hype around our program will officially be back.
