Michigan State gymnastics has won its first-ever outright Big Ten title and is now the back-to-back conference champion.
The Spartans have done it. For the first in program history, Michigan State gymnastics have won the Big Ten regular-season championship outright. Last season the Spartans shared the regular season title, but this year they won it outright.
Not only are the No. 8 Spartans Big Ten champions, they did it with a perfect 9-0 record. MSU was 5-0 in conference play heading into the Big Five meet tonight, and the Spartans thrived under the pressure.
Big Five meet
Penn State played host to this year’s Big Five meet. This is a meet where each team will face off against four other Big Ten teams simultaneously. The four teams MSU played on Friday were No. 14 Ohio State, No. 15 Minnesota, No. 23 Nebraska, and Rutgers.
Here are the final results from Friday night’s meet:
- Michigan State: 197.275
- Ohio State: 197.000
- Minnesota: 196.900
- Nebraska: 195.725
- Rutgers: 195.275
The five other Big Ten teams will participate in their own Big Five meet as well, but the results of that meet are ultimately irrelevant. MSU already faced those five schools individually this season and beat them all en route to their perfect conference season. The biggest win of the year came at Michigan who shared the Big Ten title with Michigan State last season. That win put the Spartans in perfect position, which they capitalized on all year.
Upcoming Big Ten championships
Even though Big Ten play is over, the Spartans still have five non-conference meets before postseason play begins. Just based on who those opponents are, MSU has a great chance to run the table and beat them all. That leaves one final meet before the NCAA tournament: the Big Ten championships.
As mentioned, the Spartans shared the Big Ten regular-season title last year, but they failed to win the Big Ten championship meet. They will look to pull off the conference sweep this year, this time at home. On March 23, the Spartans will host the Big Ten championship meet at Jenison Fieldhouse.
The Spartans still have a lot to play for this season, but this is a huge accomplishment. The first outright and back-to-back Big Ten championships in program history is no small feat. Regardless of what happens the rest of this season, this has already been an amazing year, and it can only get better from here.
