Michigan State gymnastics won the Big Ten title over the weekend and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
The Michigan State gymnastics team is on a roll. The Spartans won the regular season Big Ten championship a few weeks ago, and they once again are adding more hardware to their trophy case.
This past weekend, Michigan State was the host for the Big Ten championships. Every Big Ten team participated, but the top four regular season finishers competed in the second leg of the championships. The Spartans faced Michigan, Ohio State, and Minnesota over the weekend, and once again came out on top as Big Ten champions.
The Spartans narrowly won the Big Ten championship meet, beating Minnesota 197.600 to 197.500. Michigan came in third with 197.225 and Ohio State took fourth with 197.050.
This win is extremely significant as it is the first time MSU has won both the regular season and postseason Big Ten titles in the same season. The Spartans won the regular season last year, but came up just short at the Big Ten championships. This year, Michigan State left no doubt that they are the top dogs in the conference.
Here is the reaction from the team right after they found out they won the meet.
The Spartans also earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season. They earned the No. 12 overall seed and the No. 3 seed in the Gainesville Region.
Postseason play begins on April 5 when the Spartans will compete in the first of two sessions. They will take on No. 5 seed Utah, Towson, and Maryland. The top two finishers will move on to the regional finals on April 7 and will compete against the top two finishers from the second session which consists of No. 1 Florida, No. 4 Missouri, Georgia, and the winner of a play-in meet.
Last season, the Spartans finished third in the regional finals and fell just short of qualifying for the NCAA championships. Based on this season’s performance, the Spartans should have no issue advancing to the regional finals again. However, the regional finals will be difficult to move on from as the Spartans will likely go up against three programs ranked higher than them.
That won’t stop this team as they’ve been on a meteoric rise all season and will look to break through and make it to the NCAA championships this season.
