Michigan State Hockey: Karsen Dorwart gets ELC with Philadelphia Flyers

After a disappointing finish in the NCAA Tournament Regional, Michigan State hockey star Karsen Dorwart has found a new home. He has also played in his last game for the Spartans.

After registering a goal and an assist in the regional semifinal last week against Cornell, he received a contract from the Philadelphia Flyers. The contract is an two-year ELC (Entry Level Contract). An ELC will allow him to show the Flyers what he can do at the NHL level. He finished the year second on the team in scoring, behind only Isaac Howard. With production like that, it isn’t surprising that an NHL team is taking a chance on the undrafted center.

In an assessment of Dorwart’s abilities, Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis had this to say: “This guy is probably the best two-way center of any of the college free agents out there. He really controls the puck well. I saw him a couple of times in person this year, and it felt like he was just involved at both ends of the ice. He’s not going to be a high-end producer, pretty much at any level, but I think he’s got the hockey sense and that defensive responsibility that you can plug him in different spots, and he’s going to perform.”

Dorwart finishes his career at MSU with three seasons under his belt and 92 points (38-54-92). He also won consecutive Big Ten regular season and tournament championships. He leaves MSU’s hockey program in a much better situation compared to when he first joined as a freshman.

Dorwart is poised to also make an impact at the NHL level. As mentioned above, he likely won’t fill a top six role. It is not crazy to think he could make a name for himself in the bottom six though. He is very smart, and very tough which is a dangerous combination for other teams at the next level. It will be very interesting to see how he fits in with the Flyers going down the stretch.
