Michigan State hockey has three preseason All-Big Ten members. This is quite the representation for the Spartans.
We are closing in on a month away from the start of Michigan State hockey and I, for one, can not be more excited. The Spartans are coming off their best season in years after going 25-10-3 and winning both a Big Ten regular season and tournament championships. They return the bulk of their roster and are coming into the new season ranking No. 1 in the Big Ten preseason poll. It’s safe to say that hype is high heading to this season and coaches/media members are starting to notice.
The preseason All-Big Ten rosters were announced this week and of course, the Spartans were well-represented. Sophomore Trey Augustine, junior Karsen Dorwart, and junior Isaac Howard were selected as first-team selections.
Augustine was picked unanimously.
Trey Augustine
The sophomore goaltender enters the 2024-25 season as one of the best goaltenders in college hockey. Augustine’s freshman season was spectacular as he boasted a 2.96 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage. Trey went 23-9-2 last year, earning himself second-team All-Big Ten honors. He also was able to lead Team USA to World Junior Championship gold in Sweden last year and also got the chance to compete for Team USA at the Men’s World Championships after the NCAA tournament. Expectations are high for Augustine as this may likely be his last season in the green and white before turning pro and signing his NHL Entry Contract with the Detroit Red Wings.
Isaac Howard
Isaac finished the 2023-24 campaign with honorable All-Big Ten honors. He led Michigan State hockey in points last season with 36. Howard totaled career-bests last season in goals, power-play goals, assists, and points. He was a major contributor on the score sheets and helped set up the biggest goals down the stretch in the Big Ten title game and the two NCAA tournament games as well.
Look for Howard to be another key focal point in the Spartan offense this season.
Karsen Dorwart
Dorwart also finished last season as an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection. Like Howard, he has flourished offensively under Adam Nightingale. The alternate captain hit career-bests last season in goals, assists, and points. He had 34 total points during the season. Dorwart also finished second in the Big Ten in shorthanded goals. As good as he is on the ice, he’s also a star in the classroom. Dorwart was selected as an Academic All-Big Ten selection last season. He is returning as an alternate captain again and will be a big part of the team’s leadership this season.
Congratulations to Augustine, Howard, and Dorwart on their preseason honors. That is a fantastic accomplishment for all three players.
Michigan State hockey season is fast approaching, folks.
