The Michigan State women’s basketball team has been on fire this year and it’s time to buy stock in Robyn Fralick’s squad.
Nobody has been talking about Michigan State women’s basketball enough, that is until Tuesday night. The Spartans had an impressive record of 11-2 as they traveled to Iowa to take on the No. 4 Hawkeyes. Iowa is the NCAA Tournament runner-up from last season and has the best player in the country in Caitlin Clark.
The Spartans, however, did not flinch.
MSU vs. Iowa
Michigan State had no business playing this Iowa team tough. But it showed up in a big way and showed the country that they belong on this stage.
Michigan State unfortunately fell to Iowa 76-73 in heartbreaking fashion. After DeeDee Hagemann tied the game with 24 seconds left after a tough layup, Caitlin Clark did Caitlin Clark things. She hit a step-back 3-pointer from the front of the logo as time expired to give the Hawkeyes the win.
This was a truly heartbreaking way to lose a game, but the Spartans should not hang their heads. For starters, they began the game on an 8-0 run, which is impressive against anyone. They also fought hard and got back into the game after being down multiple times in the game. MSU was down 33-24 before closing the first half on a 13-2 run to take a two-point halftime lead. MSU was also down 66-57 with five minutes to play before fighting back to tie the game late.
Sometimes the best player in the country just takes over. There wasn’t much MSU could do to stop Clark who scored 40 points for Iowa. But the Spartans have nothing to hang their heads about and they showed that they belong on the court with the best teams in the country.
Buy stock now
Now is the perfect time to buy stock in this program. But not just for this season, but for years to come. First-year head coach Robyn Fralick has her Spartans off to a fantastic start this season. After the loss to Iowa, the Spartans are 11-3 on the season and 1-2 in Big Ten. This is a significant improvement compared to the past few seasons, which is awesome to see under a first-year head coach.
MSU’s program wasn’t in a bad place at the end of Suzy Merchant’s tenure, but Fralick has been able to improve the team quickly since taking the job. The Spartans hovered around .500 the last two years, but clearly they are doing much better now.
They also failed to make the NCAA Tournament two straight years, but we have a great shot this season. The team has a lot of work to do, especially with their 1-2 Big Ten record, but they are playing much better than that record suggests.
If Fralick can do this in year one, imagine what she can do with more time under her belt. She has been an amazing hire so far and the hype surrounding the program is as high as ever in recent years. If you haven’t been paying attention to this team, now is the perfect time to start.
