Star sophomore receiver Nick Marsh was seen traveling to USC with Michigan State football on Thursday. Good news?

After a brief hiatus from writing for Spartan Shadows, I’m back in the saddle and ready to deliver some positive news for Michigan State fans.

This Saturday, Michigan State Football kicks off conference play with a challenging road trip to USC. The game is scheduled for an 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time kickoff, which means the Spartans will be dealing with both a late start and a three-hour time zone difference. That alone makes this matchup against Jayden Maiava and the Trojans an uphill battle. Add in the uncertainty surrounding one of MSU’s biggest offensive weapons, and the stakes feel even higher.

Last week’s win over FCS opponent Youngstown State came with some tough injury news to key starters, star WR Nick Marsh among them. It’s unclear when his injury happened but Marsh sat the entire 2nd half.

Per my source, the Michigan State Football X account, Marsh was spotted boarding the team plane to Southern California. While this doesn’t guarantee he’ll suit up on Saturday, it’s an encouraging sign that his health is trending in the right direction.

The Spartans’ coaching staff worked hard this offseason to add depth to the wide receiver room, and that effort could pay off if Marsh is limited or unavailable. Transfers Evan Boyd and Rod Bullard Jr. are two names to watch if additional snaps open up.

The late kickoff, travel, and talent on USC’s roster make this one of the toughest games of the year but if Jonathan Smith and company can come away with a win, it may just change the trajectory of the entire program.  On the other hand, a blowout loss may start to heat up Smith’s seat.

Hope you have your caffeine ready.
