FAU head coach Tom Herman gushed about Spartan Stadium, stating that it’s louder than the environment in Ann Arbor.
When it comes to how loud a fanbase and stadium is, usually having more fans in seats equates more towards having a louder atmosphere causing the away team more issues while on offense but according to FAU head coach Tom Herman, this is not exactly the case. When asked about Spartan Stadium, Herman not only praised the atmosphere of it, he also compared it to the Big House.
Herman said, “That stadium in Ann Arbor holds 40,000 more people, and I thought the one in East Lansing was significantly louder and more disruptive for an offense. We’re going to have our hands full when it comes to playing in that environment.”
This is a quote coming from a man who has coached at Ohio State. He was the offensive coordinator for a few years and even went into the Big House when Ohio State won 42-41. It’s not like he hasn’t experienced the best crowds in Ann Arbor before and he still thinks that Spartan Stadium causes more issues for the offense than Michigan does.
For anyone that might think he only thinks this because he was an offensive coordinator when Michigan State was really good, I do think that could be a factor but not the whole story.
Let’s take a look at the stadium and then the possible atmosphere that could take place this Friday. If you look at the construction of both Spartan Stadium and the Big House, the former, from all accounts, does a better job of keeping fan noise in the stadium. While Michigan’s stadium is bigger, if you have more noise kept in the stadium, it will be louder for that offense on the field.
Another rebuttal from some fans could be that lately Michigan State hasn’t been good and hasn’t filled up the stadium that much especially late in the season. This shouldn’t be an issue because it’s a Friday night game and the first game under Jonathan Smith. There is going to be excitement for a new head coach and for college football to be back in East Lansing.
Because of those things, the crowd will be a factor in this game and don’t take that just from me, take that from the words of a head coach that said the same thing who has coached in some of the biggest of games especially against Michigan and Michigan State.
