Michigan State football: Katin Houser comments on Payton Thorne transfer

Katin Houser had a message for Michigan State football fans following the transfer of Payton Thorne this week.

In case you missed it on Saturday night, Michigan State football quarterback Katin Houser posted a video about former teammate Payton Thorne. In the video, the freshman quarterback goes on to wish Thorne the best of luck as he begins his career at Auburn.

Houser also went on to thank Thorne for being a great mentor and leader for him throughout his first season. This was a very classy move by Houser and something all fans should learn from.

At the end of the day, these athletes we love so much are just human beings just like us, trying to do what they think is best for their life. Just because their interests may not align with yours doesn’t make them bad people. When someone decides against your school it’s best to do what Houser did and wish them luck and move on.

For all the backlash Thorne has received since he decided to transfer, this statement goes to show how great of a person he is. Some veteran, starting quarterbacks may not give the new guy the time of day during the season. But that doesn’t seem to be the case here. By all accounts, it sounds like Thorne was a great leader and welcomed Katin with open arms to the team. It sounds like Thorne did everything he could to help Houser develop into the best quarterback possible, which is what any true Spartan would do.

In the second half of Houser’s video, he went on to say that he can’t wait to get back to East Lansing and compete with the guys. He also mentioned he has his “eyes set on Central Michigan” meaning he is ready to compete for and win the starting quarterback job.

Every Spartan fan is going to be paying close attention to the quarterback competition this offseason as Noah Kim and Houser battle it out for the starting job. It appears to be an extremely tight race, so anyone’s guess is as good as mine as to who’s gonna come out on top.

Houser demonstrated one of the most important qualities for any quarterback to have in this video: leadership. If he is named the starter against CMU, we won’t have to worry about who he is as a leader and if he will be able to lead our guys the right way throughout the season.
