After weeks of speculation, Malik Hall broke his silence and announced his return to Michigan State for one final year.
Monday was a great day for Michigan State hoops with Tyson Walker announcing his return for one final season. Tuesday brought more really good news for the Spartans with Malik Hall officially announcing his return in 2023-24.
This was something that a lot of fans wanted to see happen because Malik was robbed of a normal senior year, battling a foot injury twice. He hurt his foot prior to the season, right before the PK85, and then once again in January. Hall missed a month of action from November until late December and then two weeks in January.
Returning for a fifth year, he’s hoping for some normalcy and to finally play to his potential which many of us know could be limitless.
In his return message, he cited his foot injury and stated that the Sweet 16 run fell short of expectations they set for themselves, but next year could be special. This return definitely fuels the “national title or bust” narrative that some fans have been conjuring up.
Hall showed flashes last season despite fighting injuries throughout and never really being 100 percent. He was really good in the final two weeks of the year, scoring in double figures in 4-of-5 games before the Big Ten Tournament loss to Ohio State. He scored six against USC, four against Marquette, and then 11 against Kansas State in the NCAA tourney.
Although he was criticized heavily (even, at times, by myself), he was an integral part of the team and was the leader that they needed in certain situations. The Spartans don’t beat Iowa on January 26 without Malik Hall.
With his return, he should be a staple of that starting five along with Walker, AJ Hoggard, Jaden Akins, and Mady Sissoko.
Next year’s team will be the most experience that Tom Izzo has had in some time and the talent matches that.
It feels like big things are in store with Tyson Walker and Malik Hall officially back.
