The Michigan State basketball staff was in to see five-star forward Trey McKenney on Tuesday. The staff is pushing hard.
The Michigan State basketball staff has been laying the groundwork for their 2025 class for quite some time now. However, we are now starting to get a good idea as to who the priority targets are for MSU.
No recruit seems like more of a priority than five-star forward Trey McKenney, who the Michigan State coaching staff is reportedly visiting once again.
Five-star forward Trey McKenney
Trey McKenney is a five-star forward from Flint, Mich. He’s the No. 1 recruit in the state of Michigan, and is also ranked extremely high nationally. According to the 247Sports composite rankings, he is the No. 14 player in the country and No. 3 small forward.
Michigan State assistant coaches Thomas Kelley and Mark Montgomery were once again visiting McKenney. This is becoming a common theme in his recruitment, showing that he may just be the most important recruiting target for MSU this class.
The same Michigan State assistants also visited McKenney back in early January as well. MSU visiting McKenney this much during the height of their season carries a lot of significance. Especially now, when the Spartans are getting ready for the postseason, it’s quite shocking to see coaches visit recruits. But there is no coach who works harder than Tom Izzo, and no staff who works harder than his. So maybe this isn’t much of a surprise.
Recruiting competition
As you would imagine with any five-star recruit, the competition to win his recruitment features many impressive programs. However, Trey himself let us know at the end of January who’s recruiting him the hardest.
Those programs are Michigan State, Michigan, Rutgers, Notre Dame, Georgetown, and Missouri. This isn’t who McKenney’s top programs are, just who is recruiting him the most. Trey has not released who his top schools are, but you have to think the Spartans are up there. With the amount MSU is visiting and contacting Trey as well as being an in-state school, it would be hard to not be one of his top schools right now.
The next step for Michigan State basketball is to get Trey on campus for a visit. There are no predictions yet in his recruitment, but if Michigan State can accomplish that then I would start feeling very good about the Spartans’ chances in his recruitment.
