Michigan State basketball is pushing hard for five-star 2025 guard Trey McKenney from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s.

Michigan State basketball is feeling really good about themselves right now riding their five-game winning streak. Everything seems to be clicking on the court, and now Tom Izzo and his coaching staff are working hard on the recruiting trail.

MSU was reportedly in to watch a 2025 five-star prospect on Friday and this will definitely be a player to monitor.

MSU pushing hard for Trey McKenney

Trey McKenney is one of those high school prospects that Michigan State must have. He is a five-star guard and the No. 13 recruit in the class of 2025.

McKenney is an elite multi-level scorer with the ability to stretch defenses well beyond the arc. He may not be the quickest player in the country, but he still has good speed in transition. Trey also isn’t a one-dimensional player either as he is a solid and active defender who uses his above average wingspan to his advantage.

A prospect as good as McKenney should always be high on MSU’s recruiting board, but he should be even higher for another reason. Trey is from Flint, Mich., and is the No. 1 player in the state. Izzo tends to prioritize players from Michigan and I don’t see that being any different here.

It’s always important to “close your borders” in recruiting. By this I mean that you need to keep the in-state talent from going to other schools. Izzo has always been good at recruiting in Michigan, but he will no doubt be tested in this recruitment.

Recruiting battle

As with any five-star recruit, this will be a difficult recruitment to win. According to 247Sports, Trey already has 35 scholarship offers. This includes Kansas, Illinois, Tennessee, Michigan, Alabama, and Indiana along with Michigan State.

It’s hard to get a good feel on his recruitment since it’s still very early. Most college staff’s attention has turned to the 2025 class, but there is still 11 months until signing day.

However, recruiting site On3 likes Michigan State’s chances. They have MSU in the lead in his recruitment and give us a 21 percent chance to land McKenney. That’s an extremely low percentage to lead a recruitment, so that just goes to show that no team is a clear leader right now.

However, when Izzo is involved, the Spartans always have a good chance. Add in the fact that he’s from Flint with all our program history in that area and I personally love their chances in this recruitment.
