Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo is one of six coaches who have been in to see five-star Trey McKenney this year.
Michigan State basketball is finding a lot of success on the court recently, and now they’re looking to do the same in recruiting. Tom Izzo and the MSU staff are prioritizing one 2025 high school recruit in Trey McKenney. He is a five-star prospect and one of the best players in the country in the 2025 class.
The MSU staff has been in to see Trey play recently, but the Spartans aren’t the only school to do so either.
In a post on X, an update was shared as to which schools have been in to recruit McKenney in person.
Who else is recruiting Trey hard?
As you can see in the post above, two other Big Ten schools have also seen McKenney play recently in Michigan and Rutgers. Notre Dame, Georgetown, and Missouri have also seen the talented guard play as well.
Now no one has said this is McKenney’s top six schools in his recruitment, but this is a very interesting list of schools nonetheless. No team or program listed above is really on the Spartan’s level. As a program, it’s pretty clear that Michigan State is the best on the list. But even looking at this current season alone, all of the other teams aren’t that great.
All Big Ten fans know the season Rutgers and Michigan are currently having, with both being bottom tier teams. The same can also be said for the other teams as well. Missouri and Georgetown only have eight wins and Notre Dame has seven this season. I know Michigan State hasn’t had the best season so far, but it has clearly been better than these other schools.
I also know that recruitments don’t always come down to team success, so maybe this doesn’t matter to McKenney. But if team success does matter than you have to love the Spartans’ chances.
Who is Trey McKenney?
Trey is a five-star guard and the No. 13 recruit in the class of 2025. McKenney is an elite multi-level scorer with the ability to stretch defenses well beyond the arc. He may not be the quickest player in the country, but he still has good speed in transition. He also isn’t a one-dimensional player either as he is a solid and active defender who uses his above average wingspan to his advantage.
A prospect like McKenney should always be high on Michigan State’s list, but he should be even higher for another reason. He is from Flint, Mich., and is the No. 1 player in the state.
This will be a tough recruitment to win, but you have to love Michigan State’s chances here. The Spartans are the most notable team heavily involved in his recruitment and McKenney is an in-state kid, usually that tends to be a good sign for Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball.
