Michigan State football lost a four-star cornerback on Saturday, but another doubled down on his commitment.
If you ask Michigan State fans their thoughts on the football and basketball programs, they would probably tell you that they are really excited about basketball and worried about football. This worry for the Michigan State football program was not softened on Saturday by Jamari Howard decommitting.
If you ask the insiders and a lot of other people, this move should not be a surprise.
While this shouldn’t be a surprise, Michigan State fans went to social media to express their frustration. This frustration has been felt by the fans for the past eight months, or so, as the Spartans did not make a bowl game last year and it seems like recruiting isn’t going well. While both of those are true, Michigan State did get some good news and that came from their highest-ranked recruit and that was Jaylen Thompson.
Thompson recently said he is “110% locked in and ready” when speaking to Spartans Illustrated’s Ryan O’Bleness about Michigan State. While this is just a quote and if you ask anyone in the recruiting world, they say things can change at any moment, this does seem like a very positive sign for the football program. If Thompson does sign with Michigan State, he is coming into a position that has really struggled these past few years. He would be able to come into the program and make an impact early on.
This doubling down on his commitment isn’t going to get a lot of coverage but it shows that this program can keep and recruit great players.
Some fans might read this article and still say things are falling apart for the football program. Some fans might argue that we have seen this happen in the past and then the player commits elsewhere.
The point of this article is to say, things are not falling apart right now.
There is still a lot of time to get more players into this recruiting class. Michigan State currently has three commits in the class of 2024. There is still plenty of time and there will be more commits coming in the future. If Michigan State is still only at three commits after the next few months, that is the time to start to worry. It’s not time to panic especially because of the statement from our highest-rated recruit after Michigan State lost a top commit.
Thompson is still behind this football program and while it is frustrating right now, especially for those fans that pay attention to recruiting, you should still be behind Michigan State and Mel Tucker, and once these next few months pass, then we can reevaluate where the Spartans sit.
