Michigan State football is hosting one of the top remaining defensive backs in the transfer portal in Indiana’s Kobee Minor.

Another day, another transfer portal target for Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football.

It seems like Smith has a great pulse on the portal as he’s been landing his priority targets at will this offseason. While most of his portal additions haven’t been big names, they’re guys who will fill voids on the roster with experience.

Another target popped up on Tuesday in the form of a 2023 All-Big Ten honorable mention defensive back.

Minor didn’t have eye-popping numbers last season at Indiana, but it was a career year for the junior from Dallas, Texas. He finished the season with 20 total tackles and four pass breakups, earning some votes from the media and coaches as an All-Big Ten honorable mention. His one season with the Hoosiers was a success but he’s back in the portal. Minor spent his first two seasons with Texas Tech, playing in 23 games primarily on special teams, and had 12 tackles and two pass breakups as a backup cornerback in 2022.

It’s pretty clear that Smith is looking to bolster that defensive back room and some of these recent additions could help out the safety position as well as cornerback. Michigan State’s safety spot is extremely thin, especially after losing Jaden Mangham to the portal.

The Spartans recently landed North Carolina defensive back transfer Lejond Cavazos and earlier this spring, they beat out Alabama for Arizona State cornerback Ed Woods. These are key additions that should help the defensive backfield and add some veterans with playing experience at the Power Five level. Minor would do the same.

Smith has had a heavy hand in the transfer portal and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change any time soon.
