Michigan State football was targeting a couple of transfer receivers in the portal but they both committed elsewhere.
Since the departure of Keon Coleman, Michigan State football fans have been waiting for Mel Tucker and Co. to find a replacement through the portal.
In the days following Coleman entering the portal, Michigan State showed interest in a couple of wide receivers that caught fans’ attention.
First, was former Alabama wide receiver Tyler Harrell. Michigan State was able to get Harrell on campus for a visit. The speedster receiver had a down year due to injury at Alabama but has shown game-breaking speed and absurd yards per catch. Many in MSU circles felt confident about Harrell landing at MSU. The wide receiver even prematurely received a “100% to Michigan State” from On3 insiders.
The post-visit buzz surrounding Harrell seemed to die quickly so it’s unsure whether or not Michigan State withdrew their interest. Nonetheless, Harrell has a new home.
On Friday, he announced his commitment to a Miami via Twitter:
Then came in-state wide receiver Jahdae Walker. He played the last two seasons at Division II GVSU. He was considered one of the top DII prospects in the nation and received multiple offers from Power Five schools. Walker perhaps fit the “Keon Coleman” build a little more than Harrell and showed an ability to make contested catches.
When you have a player like Walker enter the portal right in your backyard, Michigan State had to go after him. The program was one of the many that made him an offer. The proximity to the player made many Michigan State fans optimistic about the program’s chances of landing him, but unfortunately, that never materialized.
Like Harrell, Walker now also has a new home and announced his commitment to Texas A&M via his Twitter page:
With these two players finding homes outside of East Lansing, some Michigan State fans are starting to get restless. You can expect the program to continue looking into other options in the portal, but fans won’t be satisfied until one chooses to join the green and white.
It’s possible the coaching staff is confident enough in the guys that are already in the locker room that they don’t feel the same sense of urgency as the fanbase.
