The women’s Michigan State golf team fought hard but failed to advance in the NCAA Championships.
The women’s Michigan State golf team completed round three at the NCAA Championships on Sunday, May 21. They finished the day shooting 10-over par, finishing the tournament at 21-over. This result put them in 18th place out of 30 teams.
Unfortunately for the Spartans, they needed to finish in the top 15 teams to advance to the next round.
For the third day in a row, the Spartans were led by Katie Lu who shot 1-over par. Valentina Rossi shot 2-over and Brooke Biermann shot 3-over par. Lastly, Shannon Kennedy shot 4-over par on the day and Leila Raines shot 9-over. The Spartans struggled getting any momentum going all day as they only carded seven birdies. The back-nine was especially difficult as Kennedy was the only Spartan to make a birdie.
One Spartan golfer did qualify for the fourth and final round today. Katie Lu, who is 1-over par for the tournament, is still competing today. She will be playing as an individual and will be competing for the individual national championship.
The season did not end as the Spartans would have liked, but they had a remarkable season nonetheless. This is the 13th time in 26 seasons the Spartans qualified for the NCAA Championships in head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stol’s tenure. That is a remarkable accomplishment. Also, the Michigan State team won the regional championship to qualify for the NCAA Championships. This is the first regional title in program history and will be remembered forever.
Congrats on a great season ladies and good luck Katie in the final round.
